An opportunity to build nursing skills

Learn about one of the fastest-growing sectors of healthcare in the new Long-Term Care Scholars (LTC Scholars) course.  LTC Scholars is a one-quarter elective course for second year Bachelors of Nursing Science students that combines on-site visits to LTC skilled nursing facilities with a specialized curriculum that focuses on LTC competencies and skills.  LTC Scholars was offered in Fall Quarter 2025 to a limited number of University of Washington second year Bachelors of Nursing Science students at the Seattle campus.

What did LTC Scholars include?

Course description included:

  • Online, interactive LTC-focused modules designed by the DPEN Team
  • Optional, weekly 1-hour seminars with a clinical instructor (Christina Coulter, PhD, AOANP-BC, ARNP) for mentorship and discussion
    • Dr. Christina Coulter is the lead instructor for the LTC Externship course and has extensive experience developing course content, educating students and practicing nurses by providing mentorship and precepting that focuses on skill development and competency based principles. Her clinical practice at the Swedish Center for Comprehensive Care is focused on older adults with multiple chronic conditions and neurocognitive disorders.
  • Exposure activities with on-site visits to LTC skilled nursing facilities
    • Tours
    • Observation and shadowing
    • Clinical learning opportunities with LTC nurses, administrators, directors of nursing, activities department, social work, and more!
  • $1,000 scholarship per student
